(4)help sb. (to)do,不用 doing。
ladies and gentlemen,
i have had a lot of teachers in my school who have given me much help in my study. for their help i will never forget them. but today i am going to talk about a special teacher of mine. this teacher is not a human being and its name is“computer”. it has been teaching me a lot of knowledge and i appreciate it very much.
how can i interact with a computer? there are many ways, including keyboard, mouse pointer, and touch screen. i often use a keyboard. when i press right keys, i can see and hear whatever i want. information world is at my fingertip. i wish that true speech input-output system would be invented one day.
as teachers, computers have a lot of virtues: they are positive, they have good memories and never lose any information stored in them. they have much knowledge in every field. they can let out all kinds of sounds, and can also improve the efficiency of our study. for example, if i want to, i can skip some chapters so that i can study at my own pace.
although computers will never take the place of human teachers, they are welcomed by more and more learners. computers will continue to evolve(发展)with the aid of modern technologies. computers are so powerful, helpful and important that everybody needs it, especially in the future! i love my computer teacher!

The United States Public Health Service is issuing continual warnings to smokers. If they abstain completely from smoking, their chances of acquiring lung cancer will be one in 275. Their chances of dying of lung cancer will be one in 10 if they become heavy smokers─two or more packs a day. Lung cancer is fatal in 95 per cent of all cases.
But in spite of glaring evidence and frequent warnings, the public is smoking more and more. The Department of Agriculture estimates that this year's consumption of cigarettes will reach 180 packs per person fifteen years of age and over. How many cigarettes does this mean per person?─3600.
Why is smoking such an important problem? Because smoking is not a mere habit, as so many think it is. No, it is more serious than that. A habit can be broken easily enough, but an addiction cannot. Smokers lapse into helplessness! Daniel Schubert, of the University of Chicago, quizzed 226 students at a large Northwestern college about their smoking habits─why they started, what satisfaction they got, and if they wanted to stop. According to Schubert, they wanted to quit smoking; but they couldn't.
If one is addicted to cigarettes, he is dependent upon them physically, as well as psychologically. What is it, if it is not addiction, that motivates a man to go out in sub-zero weather to buy a pack of cigarettes? If necessary, he will drive ten miles late at night to find an open drugstore. What is it, if it is not addiction, that makes a moocher of an otherwise charming young girl?
I was talking to a professor not long ago who had just quit smoking. He told me what most of you already know─that once the habit is started, watch out! It is next to impossible to stop smoking. I asked him how he ever managed to quit when he had been smoking over a pack a day for ten years. Listen to his story.
"Well, I cut down to one-half pack a day for the first week.
I was touchy most of the time. The slightest irritation made my nerves jangle and my head want to explode. The next week I smoked five cigarettes a day and had an even worse case of nerves. Then the following week I chewed gum and sucked on mints, candy, and pipe stems. Frankly, I wasn't sure from one moment to the next if I could keep going. Somehow I made it."
Many of you know what this professor is talking about; you, too, have tried to break the addiction, but have failed. In the few minutes we have here today we can analyze the motives at the root of our smoking problem.
Perhaps we can assure those who do not smoke, (and I am happy I can still include myself in this group), to nip in the bud the urges of those who are about to begin smoking, and to encourage to cut-down those who are already confirmed smokers.
Let's begin with group pressures. We race to maturity, to grow up all at once. We want poise, selfconfidence, and lots of friends; we want to be accepted.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is "crossing the sea" . an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in this poem "we and they" :
all the people like us are we
and everyone else is they
we live over the sea
while they live over the way
we eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives
they who gobble their rice off a leaf
are horrified out of their lives.
when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? today's society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.
indeed, just take china as example; our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that it's no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonald's and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.
however, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation's mentality. just look around.
how many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?
how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in today's speech contest. who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? and i'm quite certain that if confucius had lived to see today's china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved expression of their passion.
it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.
take the united states as an example: during the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition from japan, many american companies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.
take the chinese acupuncture as another example: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!
ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. my dear fellow students, our command of the english language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.
therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.
it is my happiest dream that new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.
to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:
all the people like us are we
and everyone else is they
but once you cross over the sea
you will end by looking on we
as only a sort of they.
thank you.
女士们,先生们,我们恰逢一个伟大的时代:全球经济一体化、信息革命使得世界各种文化联系比以往更加紧密;

good evening, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen! i’m very glad for being here on this beautiful friday evening to share my thoughts with all of you on the topic of“make a change”. first of all,i really want to ask two questions: what is change, how to make a change.
change is what keeps us fresh, change is what keeps us young, change is what keeps us from getting stale and stuck in a rut. i’d like to share a famous saying of gandhi with all of you, what is, if you want to change the world, then you must change yourself first. actually, we cannot change the past, but we can change the present, we cannot change the fact, but we can change our manner, we cannot change the weather, but we can change our mood, we cannot change life’s length, but we can change life’s width. never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. if you don’t like the taste of your life, just change the ingredients.
time files! only once can we live. if you don’t want to leave any regret. let’s start right now to make a change. we must realize that it is never too late to begin making changes that can change our life. the moral to it is to change what you see and don’t like. don’t just sit there and think of how sad the place is. make a change for the better. don’t wait for the right time. there isn’t one.there is never a perfect time.just time. today always beats tomorrow. today is the only day we have. tomorrow is only a promise and may never come. dream for tomorrow but live for today. make your changes and do it now. life makes no guarantees as to what you’ll have. it just give you time to make changes, and to take chances, and to discover what secrets might come your way. it is an honor to stand here and have this chance to say that we are the ones who can make a change and let a brighter day come.
that’s all.thanks for your time!
