1 引言
2007年我国教育部颁发的《聋校义务教育课程设置实验方案》规定,聋校外语课的课程性质为选修课程,开课年级为7年级,鼓励学校根据实际情况积极开设外语课。事实上,教育及经济较发达地区的很多聋校已经尝试开设英语课,尽管具体开课年级有所不同。但是,聋生听觉通道受阻的事实,给聋生英语学习及聋校英语教学带来很大挑战。通过检索相关文献,发现我国对聋生英语教学较为关注的群体多来自于九年制特殊教育学校及高中、高校的聋生英语学科教师,他们从自身工作经验出发,总结了一些英语词汇教学、语法教学的策略。这些研究成果,客观反映了我国聋校英语学科的教学现状,体现了教师的自发探究,饱含责任与敬业精神。但是,其不足也显而易见。由于缺乏多学科人员,尤其是语言学、心理学及聋教育专家的合作,研究视角比较单一,研究成果的理论性、创新性不足。进一步检索国外有关研究,发现研究成果主要集中在语音编码与阅读能力、语音编码与编码意识等领域。研究对聋生是否存在语音编码的结论并不一致,有研究表明聋生存在语音编码,也有研究表明聋生不存在语音编码。本研究试图在借鉴国内外相关研究成果的基础上,探讨全聋学生英语词汇学习的有效策略。本研究基于个案词汇默写错误类型的分析,设计并实施干预策略,通过个案前后成绩的对比,来检测干预策略对全聋学生词汇学习的效果,进而探讨全聋学生是否存在语音编码或其他语言编码形式。
2 研究方法
2.1 研究对象
胡某,女,14岁,九年一贯制聋校6年级学生,纯音听力检测报告为左耳平均听力超过110分贝,右耳100分贝。根据中国听力残疾分级标准,该生属于一级听力残疾,程度为极重度。
该生在学前教育阶段接受过聋教育双语实验项目培训,有较好的手语沟通水平。经过与其所在班级班主任老师的交谈,了解到该生为住宿生,生活独立且有良好学习习惯,同伴关系良好,语文、数学成绩在班级均名列前茅。英语成绩中等偏下,尽管学习很努力,但效果不佳。
胡某所在聋校自六年级开始开设英语课,选用教材为江苏译林版牛津小学英语三年级教材,授课教师有英语专业大专学历,但没有特殊教育专业背景。学校为教师提供过短期岗前培训,教师具备一定的手语沟通能力。根据英语学科要求及聋生英语学习的特点,该校英语教研室规定六年级英语单词教学的目标是会认、会写,这意味着学生要掌握全部所学单词的字义和字形,既能够识别单词,也能够默写单词。
2.2 研究过程
2.2.1 评估
笔者接触个案的时间是六年级下学期开学初,上学期该生英语课一共学习了101个单词(笔者为了统计方便,剔除了其中的The Great Wall,以其余100个单词为例)。通过对个案英语课堂学习的观察,单元练习手册、试卷、作业本的分析,以及与授课教师的交谈,笔者了解到该生在英语词汇学习中的主要困难表现在单词默写方面,常常是记不住,记不牢,再现不准确,模模糊糊,似是而非。为准确掌握个案的单词学习情况,笔者根据英语学科对词汇学习的目标要求设计了“识别、默写”两种水平的试卷,分四次对其已学习过的100个单词进行了随机检测。个案在两种测试水平的得分分别是97分和68分,这表明她对学过的单词在识别水平上掌握很好,但是默写情况并不理想,只能准确默写68个单词,不能达到教学目标的要求。
对上面表中个案拼写错误的32个单词做进一步分析,发现个案单词默写的错误类型主要是:(1)字母序列问题:个案能够默写出构成单词的所有字母,但是字母的排列顺序不正确,以一种健听人几乎无法理解的错误序列拼写出来,如riado、kifine、wthie、firdge。(2)增、减字母问题:个案能够拼写出构成单词的大部分字母,但是存在增加或遗漏字母的错误,如browon、shir、shool bag、T-shir、ice、toy、yello。(3)字母序列和增、减字母错误的组合:这种拼写错误出现次数最多,如bo,rybook、tiehgr、swenates、shki、jaes、cupmane、mike、danguter等,这些单词不仅字母的拼写序列错误,同时存在增加或减少字母的情况。(4)词义干扰问题:如个案把“时钟(clock)”拼写为“时间(time)”,这种错误尽管并不多见,但依然存在,这与聋生对抽象词汇及概念的理解程度有关。
个案的单词拼写错误表明其不能有效利用语音编码识记单词,这与部分研究结论一致。个案单词拼写中常常出现的字母序列问题,如增加、减少字母问题,也反映了聋生单词掌握水平较低,记忆表象模糊,不能准确再现,这与已有一线教师的研究描述相吻合。因而,在某种程度上,本研究选择的个案,反映了大多数聋生,尤其是全聋学生单词学习的普遍性问题,具有一定的典型性和代表性。
2.2.2 目标
通过单词复习策略的干预,提高个案的单词默写准确率,巩固已学过单词,为其英语学习打下坚实的词汇基础。探索个案可能存在的非语音编码问题,包括如下问题:是否存在非语音编码?这种非语音编码是什么?可利用程度和效果如何?
2.2.3 干预过程
研究者与个案英语授课教师经过协商,决定在每周英语课课前对其进行单词复习策略的干预,内容为六年级上册学过的100个单词,每次持续时间为5~7分钟。要求个案观看一组研究者设计好的幻灯片课件,一边看一边按课件中的指导语完成习题。课件以预设好的速度自动播放,播放结束后,收集该生的答题纸以了解干预过程中个案的成绩情况。为控制无关变量的影响,要求该生不需自行复习上学期已经学过的单词,在课堂教学中也不再额外复习。
经过5周10次课,十组幻灯片课件的复习干预全部完成。为了测查是否取得了预期效果,四周后,研究者同样以“识别、默写”两种水平的试卷,分两次对个案进行了复测,并对成绩加以记录和分析,进而探讨干预策略的有效性。
2.2.4 干预内容及策略
干预所使用的材料为研究者自行设计的十组幻灯片课件,每组课件的内容与教材对应单元的学习内容一致。如第一组课件与教材第一单元“animals”的8个单词对应一致,依此类推。干预策略的实施步骤共分六个环节,分别是:①复习(唤醒记忆)、②识别(排除干扰)、③再现(巩固)、④补全字母(提供变式,增加难度)、⑤再现(巩固)、⑥默写(目标行为)。随机选取每个环节的幻灯片幻灯片一张,组合起来可以了解干预策略的全过程(示意图如下)。环节①:个案一边观看一边回忆,以唤醒头脑中的已有记忆。环节②:学生在短时记忆的帮助下,容易做出正确选择,进而掌握字义。环节③:给学生及时自我评价的机会,让学生体验到成就感。环节④:提供了较高难度的练习变式,该环节是根据学生默写中常常遗漏字母的错误以及单词字母组合规律来设计的,以帮助学生克服困难,掌握规律。环节⑤:再次呈现正确答案,加深巩固,并且不再呈现直观图片,目的是让学生深入理解并建立中英文抽象文字符合间的对应关系。环节⑥:是学生要掌握的目标行为,经过前五个环节的反复练习和巩固,由短时记忆向长时记忆转化,学生默写单词的正确率大大提高。
值得特别说明的是,在①、④、⑤环节中,研究者经反复尝试,在自定义动画中将单词的呈现方式设定为“挥舞”,即组成单词的每个字母可依次自上而下跳动呈现。这种呈现方式既利用了聋生的注意规律,学生易于在静态背景中捕捉到动态的信息内容,又能使学生清楚感知到单词字母的序列性,以克服默写中常常出现的字母前后顺序颠倒的问题。学生能按字母跳动出现的顺序打出手指语,学生用手指语书写单词的行为与视觉感知字母动态序列呈现的心理过程同时发生,两种行为紧密联系在一起。
干预设计的另一个特点是直观形象的图片信息与抽象文字紧密结合,能够帮助学生建立对抽象语言符号的意义理解和记忆线索。
此外,干预活动过程中发挥了指导语对个案行为的指导作用。六个环节不同活动内容转换时幻灯片会自动呈现简短指导语,如“我们复习一组animals的单词,看看你还记得吗”;再如“休息一下,看看你都选对了吗”等等。这样,学生能够清楚知道接下来要做什么,是需要高度集中注意力,是做题,还是自我确认答案等等。
最后,干预设计保证了学生的主体地位。干预过程中,个案一直处于主动积极的学习状态。松弛有度,“小步子、多循环”的设计给学生提供了充分练习和自我评价的机会,学生体验到了“跳一跳,能够摘到苹果”的乐趣。
3 结果与分析
3.1 个案的成绩水平
经过干预,个案单词学习的两种水平,尤其是默写水平取得了明显进步。这表明复习策略对提升个案的成绩水平具有积极意义。个案的单词识别水平由97分提高到100分,默写水平由68分提高到95分,这说明个案在较难的单词默写环节取得了明显进步,达成了本研究的目标之一。回顾干预过程,个案在总计70分钟的干预过程中,默写成绩提高了27分,说明干预具有针对性,成效显著。
3.2 个案在干预过程中的表现
干预过程中的观察及录像资料分析表明,个案在观看幻灯片课件的过程中,易于被图文并茂的幻灯片所吸引,表现出浓厚的学习兴趣,眼神专注,会不由自主伴随字母动态序列呈现的次序打出手指语,在“②识别一排除干扰”、“④补全字母一提供变式”两个环节的练习中,积极主动,在③和⑤“再现一巩固”环节呈现正确答案时,会迫不及待抢先用手指语打出答案,成就感溢于言表。经过前面五个环节的反复练习和强化,在最后“⑥默写单词环节”,教学目标的达成水到渠成(见图2)。本研究设计的干预策略,有效避免了以往单纯依靠机械记忆带来的枯燥感和挫折感,利用注意规律和认知特点抓住学生的注意力,提供了准确清晰的语言编码和表象编码,循序渐进,反复练习帮助学生把短时记忆转化为长时记忆,进而让学生体验了到学习的乐趣,维护了学生的自信心。
3.3 来自教师的反馈
教师对干预结果非常满意,没想到个案会取得这么大的进步,并对单词动态序列呈现的设计非常感兴趣。这种方式可能有助于失去语音编码的全聋学生建立清楚深刻的视觉表象编码,进而与字词形式的语言编码和手指语编码等相结合,经过反复练习,这种综合的语言编码形式得以巩固。这个特点体现了本研究策略干预的创新之处,既综合了以往研究中所强调的一般性策略,如“游戏法”“直观法”,渗透构词规律,培养兴趣等等,又突出了全聋学生的认知特点,符合学习规律、记忆规律,因而个案干预成效明显。
4 讨论
4.1 单词字母动态序列呈现对全聋学生建立非语音编码的探索
已有研究表明,全聋学生很难利用语音编码来识记单词。个案听力损失程度为一级,全聋,分析其单词默写的错误,如把单词“shirt”“shirt”“iacket”“sweater”分别默写为“skir”“shki”“iaes”“swenates”,从中可以看出,其默写错误的类型与听力正常学生有明显区别,显示出不能借助语音编码来识记单词的特征。那么要学习富有语音表征特点的英语词汇,全聋学生该借助哪种或哪几种语言编码形式来帮助其识记呢?或者如何发展形成聋生自己擅长的语言编码策略呢?类似探索对聋生英语教学无疑具有指导价值。本研究表明,全聋学生借助视觉表象编码,尤其是动态序列呈现的字母,辅以手指语编码的一一对应,能帮助其有效掌握词汇。但是,聋生视觉捕捉动态序列呈现的字母时,如何与伴随的手指语书写动作建立内在的联系?大脑在这一过程中的反应机制如何?并且这种联系是否是全聋学生识记单词的最有效策略?以上问题受限于研究方法的局限性,缺乏技术手段的有效监测等,还不能做出准确回答。但是,对这些问题的思考和深入探索,兼具理论价值和应用价值,值得引起广大学者的关注。
4.2 研究的局限性
本研究设计的复习策略,易于为一线教师借用和掌握,具有灵活的应用价值。70分钟的干预总时长,学生单词默写成绩由68分提高至95分,经验表明,这是令人满意的结果。未来研究中,如能设计对照组,延长研究周期,扩大研究取样,取得更多数据,则有助于证实干预策略的有效性、针对性和适应性。
