一、引言

图表作文是四、六级及研究生考试作文的一种考察形式。相比其它的命题形式，图表作文相对高级复杂，这也是图表作文较多出现在六级及研究生考试中的原因之一，而最近十年的四级考试中也曾出现过一次图表作文（2002年6月四级考试）。平时的作文练习要未雨绸缪，不可忽视图表作文的重要性。

图表作文要求考生根据命题要求，仔细研读图表，将说明主题的图表信息转换为文字，准确、完整地表达出来。图表类型较多，主要有以下四种形式：表格（Table）、柱形图（Bar Graph）、扇形图（Pie Graph）和曲线图（Line Graph）。无论图表是以哪种形式出现，大学英语相关测试遇到的图表作文通常都要求考生描述图表，分析原因，得出结论。纵观学生图表作文练习的各个部分，发现图表描述部分最为困扰学生，出现的问题较多。要切实提高学生图表作文写作水平，就必须分析学生在图表描述部分的问题，找到有效的解决方案。

二、图表描述的问题

下文以学生练习中的三个图表作文为实例，对其图表描述部分进行分析，指出学生在图表描述中所出现的问题。

1. 没有仔细审题读图

学生把图表作文的仔细看图准确描述过程转化为粗略看图大致描述。在这转化了的过程中，学生把看图简化了，浮光掠影地扫几眼，并没有按照题目要求对数据进行仔细的分析比较，想当然地认为理解了图表所要传达的信息，因而没有准确完整地用文字把主题所要说明的问题解释清楚。如学生对图表1的描述部分：

作文一：

剖析：这篇图表作文给出了标题、柱形图（Bar Graph）、统计表和提纲。本文的图表描述部分首先要紧扣主题读图，然后按所给提纲的要求分析、整理和归纳图表的数据。题目要求描述的是目前学生择业状况，然而该学生在这一步粗心大意，在习作中却写成换工作的状况（Boys and girls change their jobs often.）。同时还把柱形图中数据系列的数值误认为是人数，实际图表显示的是选择某种职业的男生和女生分别在男生总数和女生总数中所占的比率。审题读图是图表作文中最基本的要求，这一环节一败皆败。

2. 直接讲述分析后的结论，没引用能够充分说明主题的关键数据

图表式作文通常分为三部分：第一部分图表描述，描述图表所反映的某一现象。第二部分原因解释。仔细分析和比较图表数据，阐述导致上述现象原因。第三部分为结论。许多学生不了解图表作文的要求，认为图表只是起对主题进行补充提示的作用，图表无非是让他们更为了解主题，描述或不描述都无关紧要，或者直接进入原因解释部分更能切入主题。如作文二的第一部分――根据图表描述不同国家和地区在北京的投资状况。

作文二：

With the development of China，foreign investors think that they can get profit from China. So they all come to China and invest in Beijing，because Beijing is the capital.

分析：作文要求学生仔细察看饼图（图2），然后再描述现象。学生只是分析了图表，讲述了许多外国投资者来北京投资的分析结果，并没有把图表的信息写进文章中，如Hong Kong，Japan，U.S.A，other countries分别占投资总额的44%，19.2%，16%，21.8%，。这样的文章偏离了图表作文的要求，体现不出图表在图表作文中的重要性。

3. 分析，归纳数据的能力欠佳

描述数据我们要首先看看是几个变量（A），每个变量有几个数据（B），不妨以A*B表示。如果遇到多变量、每个变量多数据的图表，学生就会茫然不知所措，往往导致以下的错误。

3.1 喧宾夺主，没有抓到主要的数据

虽然学生在作文中已经引用数据，可是没有分析数据的增减规律，描述数据的变化趋势。如图表2只有一个变量（在北京的投资额），且赋予变量的数值不多（4个），学生并不会犯此类错误。在图3的描述部分，学生发现数据过多，加上要求写作练习的时间有限，从图表中挑上一两个数据，匆匆忙忙描述一番就跳到第二部分――分析上海家庭支出的变化原因。

图3图表告诉我们上海居民在衣食方面（Food&Clothing）的开支正逐年减少，却增加在娱乐(Recreation)、教育(Education)、医疗(Health Care)和其他(others)方面的支出。该学生并没有挑出体现变化的数据，错误传达了图表真正要传达的信息。虽然这样的错误在作文中极为少见，但不可不引起我们的注意。

3.2 “面面俱到”

这是图表作文中学生最常犯的错误。图表传达的是某一现象的变化发展，切忌漫无主题的引用所有的数据。下图3，总共有五个变量Food&Clothing，Recreation，Education，Health Care，Others，和15个数值，如果全部罗列出来，反而杂乱无章，让人眼花缭乱，不知所云，往往得分较低。描述图表时要挑选那些最典型，最能反映问题的数据，面面俱到反而没有重点。

4.缺乏图表描述的语言技能

在图表描述时，有些学生不会用英文表示不同的图表，不管是哪种图表，统统使用table。汉语的“图表”在英文中有diagram，chart，graph，table等相对应的词。Table意思是“表或表格”，如下图3，因此如汉语中的“饼图”不能用table来表示。在描述图表时，要认清图表的类型才能下笔。

另外图表的描述有一些固定句型和表达法，例如表示数据增长，数据减少等表达方法。有些学生由于平时没有积累这方面的知识，在写作中常常使用单一的句型、非常有限甚至是重复的单词对图表进行描述，只奢求达到字数要求。请看下面对图3的描述：

That on health care in 1980 is 6%，in 1990 is 10% and 2000 is 16%. That on other is 17% in 1980，in 1990 is 24% and in 2000 is 35%.

该部分完全是由一种句型“sth. is...”简单乏味地重复累加构成。除非是为了加强语气，强调某一内容，写作应尽量避免相同句型和单词的堆砌，力求使词句的多样化。

三、启示和对策

由于图表作文涉及的题材较多，是多种题材的结合体，另外图表类型多样化，此类作文无疑难度较大。加上相对其他作文命题形式而言图表作文出现次数不多，学生在心理上容易忽视图表作文，一旦遇到图表作文，很难写出切题、流畅连贯，符合考试写作要求的高质量文章。因此我们通过分析学生图表作文存在的问题，在以后的图表写作教学中采取针对性的策略，及时有效地纠正错误，解决问题。

首先加强练习，增加练习的次数。提高作文水平非一日之功，要多看多写，反复操练，由浅入深，解决部分，进而改善整体，在图表作文中首先要加强图表描述的能力。平时的写作练习不能专门训练某种命题类型，要安排一定的时间进行图表作文训练。图表作文要涵盖：表格（Table）、柱形图（Bar Graph）、扇形图（Pie Graph）和曲线图（Line Graph）这些常考的图表类型，才能遇“试”不乱。

其次是要记一些常用的表达方式。古往今来人们都肯定了背诵在提高写作水平中的作用。写作本身无规律可循，但图表作文命题却是有一定方向的，具体到描述部分无非是描述出图表反映的某一情况，引用能充分说明主题的典型数据，这些数据通常呈或增或减的变化。背诵大量图表描述的单词、句型，熟练运用地道的词句，能够有效解决图表描述的语言问题。

另外，教师要积极引导学生纠正错误，正确对待错误。写作是复杂的创造性活动，练习中出现错误是不可避免的，但也不能对错误听之任之，要发现错误改正错误。提高图表描述的能力，关键要发现图表描述的问题，才能进行积极有效的改进。教师可采用对比教学的方法，对批改过的作文和范文进行比较，加深学生对错误的认识，吸取地道的表达方法，开阔思路。同时图表描述的语言错误，通常也会在其他类型的作文中出现，诸如语法、用词、搭配等方面的错误，因此纠正图表描述的语言对于提高写作水平有极大的帮助。

四、结论

图表描述方面出现的问题，反映了学生所持的写作态度和语言表达能力。持急功近利，敷衍了事的写作态度注定不能提高写作水平，教师再如何批改，也无济于事；同时光有端正的态度，但遣词造句能力差，言不及义的也不妥。因此在写作教学中，如何洞察学生的写作动机，激发学生的习作热情，端正学生的写作态度和切实提高英文表达能力，需要大学英语教师不断实践和探索。
