ThesevererepressionandbrutalityagainstwomeninAfghanistanisnotamatteroflegitimatereligiouspractice.MuslimsaroundtheworldhavecondemnedthebrutaldegradationofwomenandchildrenbytheTalibanregime.Thepoverty,poorhealth,andilliteracythattheterroristsandtheTalibanhaveimposedonwomeninAfghanistandonotconformwiththetreatmentofwomeninmostoftheIslamicworld,wherewomenmakeimportantcontributionsintheirsocieties.OnlytheterroristsandtheTalibanforbideducationtowomen.OnlytheterroristsandtheTalibanthreatentopulloutwomen''''sfingernailsforwearingnailpolish.TheplightofwomenandchildreninAfghanistanisamatterofdeliberatehumancruelty,carriedoutbythosewhoseektointimidateandcontrol.

Civilizedpeoplethroughouttheworldarespeakingoutinhorror-notonlybecauseourheartsbreakforthewomenandchildreninAfghanistan,butalsobecauseinAfghanistan,weseetheworldtheterroristswouldliketoimposeontherestofus.

Allofushaveanobligationtospeakout.Wemaycomefromdifferentbackgroundsandfaiths-butparentstheworldoverloveourchildren.Werespectourmothers,oursistersanddaughters.Fightingbrutalityagainstwomenandchildrenisnottheexpressionofaspecificculture;itistheacceptanceofourcommonhumanity-acommitmentsharedbypeopleofgoodwilloneverycontinent.BecauseofourrecentmilitarygainsinmuchofAfghanistan,womenarenolongerimprisonedintheirhomes.Theycanlistentomusicandteachtheirdaughterswithoutfearofpunishment.Yettheterroristswhohelpedrulethatcountrynowplotandplaninmanycountries.Andtheymustbestopped.Thefightagainstterrorismisalsoafightfortherightsanddignityofwomen.
