Overthepastfewyears,terribletragediesatColumbineandotherschoolshaveforcedustotakeahardlookatyouthviolence,andanevenharderlookatwhateachofuscandoandmustdotoensurethatsuchtragediesdonothappenagain.

Althoughtherearenosimplesolutions,recentevidencesuggestswearemovingintherightdirection.Accordingtothelatestdata,violentcrimebyyoungpeoplehasbeencutnearlyinhalfsince1993;schoolyarddeathshavedroppeddramatically.Thesearebothimportantdeclinesthatreflectthelowestnationalcrimeratein25years.

But,still,wehavemoretodo.Atmydirection,theWhiteHouseCouncilonYouthViolencehasdevelopedanewwebsiteandtoll-.Andthetoll-freenumberis1-866-SAFE-YOUTH.That'''',and1-866-SAFE-YOUTH.

Weestablishedafter-schoolandsummerschoolprogramsthatarehelpingnow1.3millionchildrenayearstayoutoftroubleandsucceedintheclassroom,andwe''''velaunchedanationalprogramtofosterlocalpartnershipsthatmakeourschoolssafer,identifychildrenatrisk,andgetthemthehelptheyneed.

Workingcloselywiththeprivatesectorandcommunitygroups,wealsoexpandedtheGEAR-UPinitiativetogiveyoungpeoplementorsandencouragementtoseekacollegeeducation.Andnow,arecordnumberofyoungpeoplearegoingontocollege.

Weneedtobuildonthisremarkablesuccess.HereinWashington,Congressshouldnowmoveswiftlytoclosethegunshowloopholeandrequirebackgroundchecksforallgunbuyers.Intheprivatesector,HollywoodshouldownuptoitsresponsibilitiesandstopmarketingviolencetoAmerica''''syoungpeople.
